It’s easy.
It just happens while you’re doing other things. You write every lyric and note, sing every vocal, play every instrument. If you don’t know how, just make it up. You put together drum loops. Make an album cover that’s as greasy as the music. You arrange, mix and master, remix and remaster, re-mix the remix and re-master the remaster. You run out of patience. Then you do it again.
You live with these songs, some for a decade or more. At first you try to shape them based on some godawful popularity contest that only exists in your own head. The results are appropriately godawful. Then you start listening. You get closer to what the songs already were.
Let the songs be what they are, not what you wanted them to be. Before you know it, you’re hearing something you’ve always wanted to hear. You’ve made something you’ve always wanted to make.
It’s freedom, it’s alchemy, it’s megalomania. But mostly it’s just a lot of fumbling around on your ass.
Like I said - easy.
